There was a Win2k Server and Advanced Server. Pro was the closest thing to a 'user' version and it ran pretty much all games/hardware extremely well, wheras there was rare, weird errors with the other two versions that would crop up every few major games.

The end result, I should clarify here - was that Win2k Pro is the best DESKTOP operating system for the x86.

The best server operating system, in my opinion, is FreeBSD 5.0, and the best firewall/gateway OS is one of those weird multi-million special-hardware ones the NSA uses with transactional provability and such. Failing that, OpenBSD 3.3. Because we aren't dying as far as performance goes (or close to it), we use Open around here, and the upgrade to 3.3 will be tonight.
