Meteos, eh by FABIO 08/11/2005, 10:45pm PDT
I think Meteos is one of the most overrated handheld games right now. It's slick in presentation and everything, but there's just no depth to it. Most puzzle games involve trying to set up an intricate combo so that your opponent gets a giant stack of blocks popping up to fuck him over. No such thing in Meteos, you just line up 3 blocks of the same color then...do it again, and again. There's just no depth to the game. At least half of all the lineups that happen will be accidental. Sometimes just moving the stylus randomly all over the screen will get just as good results as actually trying.

Positives:

-Very slick presentation. Good music, flashy colorful graphics. Premise is a giant evil eye of sauron type planet launches colorful meteors to destroy planets. One planet is saved when three like colored meteors line up and ignite to blast the others out of the atmosphere. A race of neon blue stick figures uses this and builds a giant space battleship to counterattack. Campaign game is the battleship travelling towards the evil planet Meteo, kicking ass along the way by blasting other planets (that they're trying to save???) while your crew of neon stick figures breakdance at the top of the screen.

- Multiple endings you can go for, one of which has Planet Meteo winning until for no reason it turns into a giant mass of spaghetti and your batteship into a giant fork which dives straight into Meteo and eats it

-Other people with a DS but without the game can download a demo off of you over the wireless connection. More games should do this. The downside to this though is that the demo is deleted as soon as they turn their system off. So apparently it's for when they're in the same room as you with a meteo ccartridge but the owner wants to play with it by himself so his friend has to settle for a demo while he's there.

Negatives:

-No depth. You're not trying to set up combos or anything. There is no higher form of thinking at all in this puzzle game. Imagine playing Bust a Move or Tetris attack without combos, just lining up three colors over and over again.

-There are a ton of different races to play (32 I think) each with their own properties. Some might have stronger gravity (making it harder to get the blocks off the top of the screen), some might have wider screens, some might have powerful verticle combos (colors lined up vertically), etc. The problem is the game tells you none of this. There is no way you'll figure it all out without some huge ass guide. The same goes with the main game. The tutorial briefly flashes important aspects at you, if you literally blink you will miss it.

It's an alright game to screw around with for a bit, but the lack of any sort of depth really limits it. See the intro, play the short campaign a few times (can be beaten in 15 minutes), go back to playing bust a move or tetris attack. A lot of reviewers (and EB clerks) will try to convince you it's the greatest tetris clone to come out in forever. Whatever.
