At the risk of calling down BDR's red-faced wrath (or ES's witty cran grape zingers) for reviewing a videogame on Caltrops:
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
PRO
Turns out that headphones wearing guy isn't Andy. In fact, they've totally shitcanned Andy.
CON
The CO replacing Andy is almost as annoying.
PRO
The whole second front thing is a neat idea. Sometimes there will be a secondary battle on the other screen. Winning there gives you an advantage in the main battle, you can also transfer units from the main front. By default the AI will control your units there. Anyone who's ever played an AW game before knows that you will want to change this immediately.
CON
The whole tag team CO swap thing is retarded. At the end of your turn you can switch to another CO. This totally eliminates the entire point of balanced CO strengths and weaknesses. In addition to swapping out CO's, you can use both their super powers at once which also gives you two turns in a row, also a bit broken. Make one of those CO's Eagle to use his lightning strike ability, and suddenly you have three turns in a row, which pretty much hands you any battle instantly.
PRO
In addition to Andy, they've eliminated some of the other annoying CO's, only missing Sonja.
CON
They've added two new Black Hole CO's and....made them exacly the same as the old ones they replaced.
PRO
They've added a CO with a high defense against indirect fire, finally giving a counter to annoying artillery massers in versus games.
CON
They ditched the cool non-linear campaign structure of AW2 where you could pick your battles and skip the annoying ones, and went back to the totally linear (and inferior) AW1 model, complete with retarded missions where friendly CO's "test" you in the middle of a goddamn war. They also made the tutorial mandatory, boring the piss out of series veterans as you're forced to play through the first half dozen instructional cakewalk missions.
They still have pipes :( |
