It takes an appreciation of making things difficult without making them cheap. Defender is hard because there are tons of bad guys and they move fast. People didn't get good at Defender by learning cheap tricks or holes in enemy patterns, they got good at defender by building their fucking chops on a control scheme that was elegant and effective. Just because you can't play it very well (and I sure can't) doesn't mean it isn't an all-time great.
