I lived under a rock for a while as a kid, but was allowed to have some Lucasarts games and some Sierra ones:
The Quest for Glory series: played them a bunch, replayed them later, still get a good feeling when certain game elements are reminiscent of the damn things (mostly in that there is as much focus on non-combat elements as on kicking the shit out of things, and audience-appropriate humor). Watching the maturity shift with the sequels - perhaps as the core audience aged, I don't know - was interesting, and the last one in the series was crap. Tried playing a third-party remake of one of them, which was tolerable but the altered combat system annoyed me.
Possibly it was this series that cemented my opinion that the combat was often busy-work and essentially skippable unless it was in some way interesting on its own merits.
Police Quest series, Space Quest series - same as above minus combat because the games barely had it. Parser annoyances and other shit notwithstanding, the damn things drove points into my tiny brain - that humor and realism could be better than the mere fantasy stories I'd been raised on until then. Replaying them later certainly peeled back the curtain, but you lot probably wrote the book on that shit on OMM.
The Lucasarts Indiana Jones games - interesting only insofar as I still have some interest in the '30s and '40s and anything that plays with the constraints of the era. Paved the way for Crimson Skies and Fallout, probably. Also, Desktop Adventures set a standard in my head for replayability all the way in fucking 1996 - the game was just a jumble of randomization tables with just enough dialogue for flavor, but nowadays every time I see some top-down tile-based clusterfuck that randomizes playthroughs I inevitably want to play it because of fucking Desktop Adventures and see it fall short because the developer didn't meet a bar set a decade and a half ago.
There are others I remember but those seem like the only ones that really have a chance to throw the nostalgia switch in my head. |
