I'm back at work (more or less) and I'm just ASTOUNDED at how terrible the new version of Microsoft's products are. Outlook, if you sort by From and then type a letter . . . nothing happens now. It doesn't jump to the Js or whatever. Everything has popups that you have to click "got it" to get past. SO MANY OF THESE. It's relentless! Teams can't tell if I'm available or not. Like clicking in teams and typing a message doesn't wake it up and set me as available. Windows 11 is shocking garbage. Just incredible. This is a decent machine but it takes 20 seconds for photo viewer to open up. Windows no longer remembers your window size settings. Used to be if you left something maximized or set to a certain size and shape, it would keep that setting when it reopened. That's history. The default fast startup shit (that Windows 10 also had) drains laptop batteries pretty quickly if you leave em in a drawer for a week or two, which happens for classroom or presentation laptops sometimes.
This shit really starts to wear on me. Why are we putting up with this SHIT?
In the text adventure hobby, there is an interpreter for games made by the company "Level 9." If you can imagine the way the games looked, there was a top window for graphics and the bottom was text. The original games looked great on monitors that were 640x480. These "fan-made" interpreters make the games work nicely for modern computers.
Well, the graphics for these games didn't magically upscale, of course. So someone put a patch to the Level 9 interpreter to scale the images. Awesome! I really want to try it out!
The repository doesn't have a release yet, so I thought I'd build it. There are instructions on how to do it. The instructions say to go get a copy of Visual Studio 2019.
And laudablepus, let me tell you... Microsoft's ability to screw up DOWNLOADING SOFTWARE is unmatched.
I try to search for it. Get taken to a page to get the latest. Dig around and find the old downloads. They are either unaware that their compilers break stuff and it's easier just to have the old version or they don't care. I try to download the 2019 version and you can't, of course. Gotta give them the "hotmail"-Microsoft email address they forced me to make years ago.
Ready to download? hahah, of course not - thought I'd try downloading with "Github." They **someone became aware of an email address I had 3 companies ago.** How. HOW?
I might have grabbed it. Maybe I did, maybe I did not - I think I'll also just ask the maintainer if they can make a release. Not that I can't do it, but I was 20 minutes in trying to download.
This is from 23 years ago and it is one of my favorite things. Bill Gates tries to use his company's shitty websites. And he can't do it. The morons that are working their stupid divisions in Microsoft can't possibly figure it out, and they never did. If you look at the timestamps, Bill raises his concerns on Wednesday, January 15, 2003. By the close of business on Friday 1/17 the managers involved hadn't done anything but vaguely wave at the issue. Dear God if I worked at Microsoft and Bill Gates embarrassed me by pointing out my incompetence, I'd have a solution started within 3 days.
They don't care. Everyone in that exchange deserved to be fired. Instead, Gates is more or less gone and these idiotic, incompetent leeches took over.
