"Hardback" is Star Realms meets Scrabble. It's better than both. by Mischief Maker 06/11/2025, 2:40pm PDT Hardback is a competitive deckbuilder where you play rival authors in the 1800s racing to max out their fame by forming words from your random hands of cards. Each letter card has a set of prizes when used successfully in a word. After making your word you can spend the prize money on higher-tier letters from the random shop. Like Star Realms, these higher-tier cards come in 4 suits and have combo bonus prizes when two or more cards of the same suit are used in a single word. "But what if you don't draw a vowel?" First option is you can play a letter from your hand face-down to act as a wildcard giving any letter you want. You just don't get any prizes from that card in the final word. The second option is to use ink pot tokens to draw extra cards, with the cost that you MUST use those ink pot letters in your word this round. Like Star Realms, each suit has a set of actions associated with it. Mystery lets you peek into the draw deck, Romance lets you trash cards from your deck, etc. It even has special sideways cards that act like Star Realms space stations which act as a letter you can use from round-to-round. I can't imagine ever playing Star Realms or Scrabble again after trying this game. Bonus points for being neither violent nor nerdy so it's a great onboarding game for normies!
