While not genre busting/creating like those games on your list, Freespace 2 came the closest to creating the "experience" I've wanted in video games ever since I first started playing the damn things. So, I say to myself, I like all of those games except for Freespace II, which I've never played. It was completely off my radar when it came out. I was aware that it existed, but I was under the impression that it was a straight first person shooter like Descent was for some reason.

I just went searching for reviews on it, and can only barely determine its genre. I take it that it is mission based, ala Wing Commander? Sell me on this, if you could please, MM. I'll head right over across the street to the EB, I just need an excuse. What do you mean, exactly, when you say up there that it creates the experience you've been wanting in video games? I get really intrigued when one of us pronounces a game as their favorite or the best ever, because there's a lifetime of sitting down with crap that makes such a statement valuable.

Freespace 2 is fucking awesome. It's very much like Wing Commander, with less of an emphasis on a story, and MUCH more badass huge fucking awesome uber-destructive megaships blowing the living shit out of each other. And I think it still looks damn cool.

Plus you can get it for maybe $5 at most video game stores. I can't find it at Best Buy anymore, tragically. It's worth $50.

Space sims aren't quite my favorite genre ever, but it's easily the best game of its kind that I've played thus far (yes, even better than Tie Fighter or Privateer 1). Freelancer looks to be the only game that might improve upon it.
