OK, so characters "do something unknown" that "will be different for every character" in order to get a force-sensitive character slot in addition to the one standard character slot each account includes. Various cryptic hints such as "attempting to camp our random spawn areas in order to gain a slot through most MOB-kills would be the completely wrong thing to do" and sundry have lead a lot of people to believe that a GM has to notice you roleplaying and give you the force-sensitive char slot.

Now, you can start a character in the force-sensitive character slot who has the potential to become a Jedi. This character, after 2-3 deaths, is DEAD FOREVER much like hardcore characters in Diablo but with a couple-deaths buffer to protect against linkdeath, etc. The requirements for making Jedi Master are, apparently, insanely difficult. Many-most people won't manage 'Padawan' according to Raph Koster. Achieving Jedi Master involves helping other Jedis rather a lot, and if a Jedi Master dies he apparently turns into a blue glowie ala Ben Kenobi in Star Wars, etc. It's unclear yet whether this means a character has the option to resurrect himself in some fashion or if he perma-glowies instead of perma-not-existing ala any Jedi less than a Jedi Master, but perma-glowie makes the most sense.

To answer your question directly: all force-sensitive characters get 2-3 deaths total, period, forever. Those who have achieved the near-impossible and managed to get 'Jedi Master' status WHILE LIVING become glowies when they die, while every other sub-Master force-sensitive character is just dead forever and sucks to be them.

It is uncertain whether the PVP-ala-DAOC (only in certain specific areas) rules will be lifted when attacking Jedi but it would make a lot of sense if this were the case.
