Caltrops - Clay Fighters - Batons: waste of time?

As someone who has played video games all his life, I've of course developed a bit of a fascination with weapons. As a result, though, I've only got cartoon sense of it -- no personal experience whatsoever. Whenever a sword thread would break out on OMM I'd be clicking right along, trying to gather as much information as possible. I live in a townhouse (in Colorado, FWIW) right now, and I have renter's insurance. With that, I don't really have anything worth blowing somebody away for. Besides my car, the only things I have of value are a washing machine, a Wega, and a Crystal Castles cocktail game. If a thief can single handedly haul those items out of my place, then Bentley there deserves the last gem. But eventually I'll get a house and start a family, I guess.

Is an ASP collapsable baton pretty much a stupid thing to go get in the meantime? If I do get a house I imagine I'll have a shotgun around just like my old man did, but the place I'm in right now is pretty small. The things that a baton has going for it is that they are cheap ($68 for 26") and (I'm guessing) they don't take an inordinate amount of skill or training to operate. (As opposed to a sword or something.) But for all I know they are ridiculed as a personal defense weapon by those with their asses in the know. I'm curious as to what the bunch of you think.
