I've considered both options. I have Kukhuri knife, but its just not practical to get out in time if you need it, and then you will look like a dumbass bleeding on the pavement with your hand reaching for a gigantic illegal knife. I think cane swords are all sorts of cool, but a bit too Rambo in the same vein, not to mention obvious. The knife I'm most fond if is the Indonesian/Philippine Korambit, which is a small eagle talon. Fast, tiny.

That said, I almost never carry a knife.

Get folder or a balisong (better a folder in case you get it confiscated, police get pissed off over Balisong); and practice getting out of an easy concealment. It doesn't take much steel to seriously fuck someone up, so nothing dramatic is really needed. Its the consequences of the fucking someone up that serve as probably the biggest deterrant to even carrying any weapon at all. I know supposedly in some parts of this country to can pretty much shoot anyone you want, but here in NYC at least it seems you're just as bad as the bad guy for defending yourself with a weapon.
