Re: weapons -
I have a pair of little fixed-blade knives that clip onto the back beltloops of pants, a push dagger with a spanish notch and a talon dagger. It's illegal to wear these into schools, government buildings, things like that - but they are very unobtrusive, and as long as you aren't really into crop tops they are a nice way to feel like a badass without breaking too many rules. You can get similar blades straight from my SO HOT MAN fairly inexpensively, and doing so will guarantee that I get nice presents for my birthday.
For home defense, and really, for personal defense too, guns are the most effective choice you can make. If you don't want to kill people to protect your stereo that's good, but in that case guns plus plenty of gun training is your best bet. I wish it were otherwise, because I would be so totally badass at like hunting down burglars with swords and bows and naginatas and blowguns and all the other cool-ass shit we have around here, but it's not about being badass. It's about staying alive in case someone wants to kill you, and if you're planning for bad news you shouldn't leave that kind of bad news out of your planning.
