That's what always drove me crazy about the Deus Ex games. They have one or two areas in the entire game with an overwhelming number of enemies then mark them off as "You're not seriously expected to fight this." The Paul ambush and MJ12 base in the original game. The crash site in HR.
Bitch, those moments should be standard in the last third of the game. Let me tear into that shit and give me full recharging batteries to do it with. Nothing is worse than when an action game turns into a long term resource management sim. Instead of making me wonder if the game is going to give me enough resources to make my way piecemeal through cannon fodder gradually wearing me down, set up huge difficult obstacles that are a challenge to my naturally regenerating resources.
Agreed. I guess the part that got to me involving the crash was that the game was very kind about leaving loads of ammo for me to kill bosses with in the room in which they trapped me with bosses... but they didn't give me a sniper rifle right before the crash site.
(OK, it's Deus Ex: they probably did. I sure couldn't find it.)
I eventually beat it without a sniper rifle by just cloaking and killing everyone up close, devouring about half a dozen candy bars whenever the batteries were about to run out. What if I hadn't been saving up candy bars the entire game? That shit shouldn't happen. Give me replenished resources for every encounter then balance those encounters around the max cap for those resources. Traditional survival horror games are the worst offenders of the long term grind trend. Scare me with a realistic chance of death for each encounter, don't piss me off into a quickload every time I open a door and an imp claws me for 12 damage.
I guess the other thing that gets me is that they give you all these upgrades, but none let you keep a second or third battery cell charged. That seems like a missed opportunity.
It all but cemented getting nothing but cloak for stealth options. Who cares if it drains more power than silent walking? You're still not going to have enough power to snap necks without popping candy bars since it doesn't matter if your one battery is 1% drained from sneaking or 90% drained from the cloak. I even think silent moving cost more upgrades than the cloak.
Ideal sequel: regenerating resources, up the enemy challenge, actual choices in upgrades, let the e-mail and side conversation guys write the story instead of the SquareEnix weeaboos who wrote the main plot.
The battery thing was a fuckup of massive proportions. I bought the silent movement aug and never used it once I found out that I would either need to 1) keep two batteries charged at all times, which meant I'd have to use a candy bar to do a takedown even if I didn't use silent movement, or 2) I'd have to silently run up to dudes and then determine whether I could hang out and let my battery charge back up or pause the game and eat a candy bar. Each path leads to immersion-breaking, candy bar munching ridiculousness.
Make takedowns take 50% of a battery. OR, 99% of one battery so if you have two batteries charged it would still recharge the second one. OR, Jesus, there are like a billion different alternatives they could have used that would have been so much better than having your death dealing cyborg be fueled by fucking PowerBars®.
I didn't take the cloak aug. |
