The battery thing was a fuckup of massive proportions. I bought the silent movement aug and never used it once I found out that I would either need to 1) keep two batteries charged at all times, which meant I'd have to use a candy bar to do a takedown even if I didn't use silent movement, or 2) I'd have to silently run up to dudes and then determine whether I could hang out and let my battery charge back up or pause the game and eat a candy bar. Each path leads to immersion-breaking, candy bar munching ridiculousness.
Make takedowns take 50% of a battery. OR, 99% of one battery so if you have two batteries charged it would still recharge the second one. OR, Jesus, there are like a billion different alternatives they could have used that would have been so much better than having your death dealing cyborg be fueled by fucking PowerBars®.
I didn't take the cloak aug.
I've started using the cloak as way too much of a crutch. As long as you have a FOUR inventory slot sized jug of protein shake powder, it's god mode for any encounter. It doesn't even break cloak when you shoot or snap necks! Enemies still have no idea where you are.
As long as I'm griping on how to turn game of the year into a flawless classic, fuck the inventory limitations. Do I waste a quarter of my inventory space carrying around this totally kickass weapon I found but with only 4 shots, not knowing when the game will deem to dole out more ammo or a dealer that carries said ammo? Meanwhile I'm coming across hundreds of revolver rounds and I never even saw one of the damn things until Montreal. I think I found about 5 tranquilizer rounds total, ammo for the very first gun you get in the game and occupier of EIGHT slots.
You're almost forced to carry the boring vanilla weapons that drop the most ammo: assault rifle, machine pistol, shotgun. Two of which are worthless because the game forgot that shotgun range = neck snap range.
Gripe #3: what is this pussy "kind soul" bonus with absolutely no downside for non-lethal takedowns? Show mercy while taking down scumfuck Blackwater baby killers? The game already discourages lethal takedowns by making you hold down the button for a length of time slightly longer than it takes a guard to gib you with a shotgun (meanwhile non-lethal is an instant effect). Frantic spasms and kicking from a sleeper hold results in a silent takedown as opposed to the ear-splitting shriek of a sliced throat. Who knew?
Gripe #4: Here I was, playing along with what the game wanted me to do. Putting all my weapon upgrades into the assault rifle because it was the only useful weapon the game gave me constant ammo for. Three damage upgrades, extended clip, reduced reload time, silencer, laser sight. Now the hacker I've been tracking says he needs a weapon to survive an ambush and my prized assault rifle is the only choice to give to him. Fuck! I've played enough RPGs to know that you're well rewarded for this shit, so fine. Here. I'll probably get some huge help in the storyline later on or he'll go on to be a major character.
*Hours later*
A short radio transmission giving me 2000 credits, less than one-fifth the cost of all those upgrades (let alone finding all those upgrades again). Thanks, game. |
