You could probably get Robb Sherwin to do it for free if you promised him a set of lockpicks. You wouldn't even have to deliver on the lockpicks. By the time he got wise, you'd be half way to Tijuana with your shitty dragon game with great writing!
this doesn't make sense, if good writers were cheap there'd be no reason not to hire them even now. I figure it's a budget thing: you can't show good writing sells a game until it does, so you can't spend the money up front.
do you think icj would still write a videogame if it had, like, pictures in it?
No offense, but I think maybe playing all these awful RPGs in God Mode has destroyed your ability to problem solve. Did you seriously not finish either Portal? Why did you even buy the second one?
I don't play good rpgs in god mode, just fucking first person bullshit games which I only started playing again because of people on omm forums telling me half-life was awesome.
I got the second portal because I had a lot of fun with the first one right up until the end. Same with the second one, coasted right through to that last bit 3 times so far, steam says it's a grand total of 18 hours, but it seems like a little more. I like the two portal games a lot and would pay way, way more than $60 for other games that were that engaging.
I don't want to claim that my reasons are at all similar to anyone else's, but I'll provide my take. However, in doing so I am reminded of that bit from "Talking Funny" where a young Louis C.K. opens for Jerry Seinfeld and tells the audience Seinfeld is the greatest comedian in the world -- with the audience responding "Oh yeah?" and crossing their arms. The last thing I want is someone downloading Cryptozookeeper and crossing their arms because of this post.
I couldn't really write anything of lasting value for the first ten years I tried making text games. (Some would say I can't do so now.) However, from 23-33 I would have been more likely to eat the bullshit that game companies ladle out. By the time that writers get a handle on their craft, they have requirements as a mature adult that don't mesh well with what game companies are known to provide. (If 80 hour weeks, constant crunch and the looming spectre of getting fired when the game ships are the exception, great. But something has gone horribly wrong with industry perception.)
Brian Fargo is going to launch a Kickstarter for Wasteland 2 in March. Would I take less money and worse benefits to work as a writer, scripter and light coder on Wasteland 2? Not really, no. Not at this point in my life. Is Fargo going to pay a substantial wage to two or three guys to write for his game? There's no business argument I can make that says he should do so. More, like fabio said, there is producer ego. At least Fargo has done something. He's worthy of our respect. Schaefer and Meretzky are worthy our respect. Writing to spec for some clown producer who hasn't done anything just makes it another job, and ehhh, I have a job.
You'll see better game writing in AAA titles when game makers unionize. However, game makers will probably never unionize.
(If I get shit-canned tomorrow please ignore all this; I'll be slobbing US, Russian, Mexican, Indian and Chinese knob for the chance to write the bit where Bobby's rabid undead dog becomes an barechested boss monster in Wasteland 2's first act.)
