Why is there only one true sequence in which a game should be experienced? It seems to me that the mark of a truly outstanding game-qua-game would be one in which any possible moment is discretely enjoyable without needing hours of sunk costs to raise the stakes. If you reframe a skip gameplay button as a re-sequencing function, is it suddenly so awful?

For instance, I would like a danger room mode in League of Legends. Sometimes all I want to practice are specific mechanics with specific champs. Sometimes these mechanics are only competitively relevant for a few minutes every game, 20-30 minutes into a game. Instead of experiencing numbing boredom while I farm up my build in a totally non-consequential bot match, I would love to be able to tell a danger room "level 8 purple kassadin with boots1, tear and health gem + blue buff midlane against kennen w/ boots1 and wota pushed to tower."

Would that be a perversion of authorial intent?

You could argue that in my example, I'm really not playing League at all, but a skill metagame. So let's take something more conventional. I like Jagged Alliance 2, but I do not have any recent saves and I do not want to start a new game only to have to slog through Drassen and Chitzena. I've already experienced those two towns probably a half dozen times now. Why can't I start in media res with a reasonably equipped squad?

I'm not against skip buttons because I'm worried about authorial intent, I'm against skip buttons because I seem them as a lazy copout to playtesting and balancing a game. If someone's trying to convince me to pay $50 for a game, I'm assuming they're presenting it as a complete whole. From beginning to end it's worth $50, not a minute of your time wasted. I see skip buttons as handing me an outline of a game with a pile of mods and attachments and saying, "you can probably configure something you'll like somehow." It's kind of like what Jerry was complaining about with Bastion and its difficulty idols. Or that awful Bioware writer who hates games was talking about where you would skip over everything but the fanfic dialog.

What you're talking about as far as skipping over parts you've already played to jump to parts you haven't or have played less, I'm totally cool with that. Like how after you completed a chapter in Half-Life 2 you could jump right to it from the main menu if you wanted to replay just that part. But it's only after you've played and that's the way I think it should be, since the burden is on them to produce something that will be entertaining. Not to hand me a pile of levels and say there's probably something in there worth $50, figure it out. They're already asking me to give 10-40 hours of my time to a game, and then they want me spend more to configure it to be fun? Fuck that.
