It's funny to me that escort missions are so widely detested even in a game like Strike Suit Zero where each escort is simply a different framing around what you always do, that being shooting things. Most games with escort missions only have that escort there to give you a different way to do what you were doing before, so rather than beating up guys to knock them out, you're beating them up to knock them out to protect your escort from them. Sure they can be frustrating but that's more balancing than anything, if the beating up guys part was too hard that would be frustrating.
So why do nerds explode with such rage over escort missions? Well I think I figured it out! It gives them someone to blame and so when they fuck up it's that NPC's fault, if he just weren't so STUPID. You can even see that in the Eurogamer review:
You acquire the Strike Suit at the end of the third mission, and the first task is an escort mission. Remember Natalya? Perhaps the most infamous 'partner' of all time, she specialised in ruining GoldenEye levels for you by getting killed. Now imagine escorting a frigate approximately a million times bigger, immobile, and wearing a giant target reading "SHOOT ME". This is the Arcadia, the most loathsome lump in the known universe. Hell, this thing is worse than Natalya; I failed this first suit mission about 20 times in a row and had to take several breaks to calm myself down.
If only that frigate did some dodging I could have beaten this mission. Why is it just sitting there being shot? What a stupid frigate, you're a bad frigate! I wonder if this guy hits his dog. Your average gamer is just too stupid to realize that it's his fault if Paul Denton dies, not Paul's fault. This is probably one of the reasons why we got Payload in Team Fortress 2 rather than Hunted, you can't blame a cart on rails after all. |
