First off, Naziism and fascism are fundamentally left-wing, not right by the conventional definition of left/right. Communism and Fascism will always have much more in common with each other than with republicanism or constitutional monarchy (in the past, European sense).
Of course, the spectrum I find more useful spans from individualism/libertarianism (and anarchy, I suppose, at its logical extreme) to all the collectivist ideologies on the left. A simple test is in the balance between liberty and egalitarianism: which would be prioritized and to what degree.
Either way, I agree that the Anne Coulter/Rush Limbaugh perspective, ironic by its very nature, is extreme in its view of the media as some sort of leftist monolith. But at the very least the numbers, in terms of who votes for what, for example, are almost as slanted in the general media of newspapers and television as they are in academia. This, combined with the surge in editorialization at ALL levels of reporting, have had a distinct effect on the spin that major media outlets provide. Common sense is sufficient, when looking at litmus test issues like gun control and Bush foreign policy, to show what the content providers are going for in addition to what the substance of the news itself would tell us.
Which is why it's a good thing that internet information, for the moment, obeys the free market at its most microcosmic level, ensuring that lunatics of all persuasions can find someone with whom to agree. Or disagree. |
