Japanese RPGs: Is there a good one? by Jerry Whorebach 02/14/2007, 3:24am PST

I played Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger for a few hours each back when they were first emulated. I couldn't tell what was going on or what about them wasn't gay and stupid. Sadly (for them), I had no interest in learning. Then a couple years later I downloaded the first Pokemon game. I chose Charmander and we had many fanciful adventures and slayed several Metapods and I guess it was fun but not enough to keep me from not finishing it. That's pretty much my entire experience with JRPGs, I've never bought one, never read a manual, never made an effort and so on.

I used to play a lot of Western CRPGs, but I gave up shortly after Baldur's Gate II came out and it was even stupider than the first but everyone said it was the best thing ever and I could tell just by reading the hype for retarded shit like NWN and Dungeon Siege that THE GENRE and I were moving in different directions. I like fantasy novels but I wouldn't touch anything with a dragon or a vampire or a two-handed broadsword on the cover with a ten-foot reading pole, I don't give a shit about my avatar's power level or batting average or chemistry classes, and I haven't been tempted to share my game experience with anyone else since Ultima Online launched/failed.

On the other hand, I like Diablo 1 and Fallout 1 and X-COM 1 and Planescape Torment, and Japanese-style adventure games like Super Metroid and Beyond Good & Evil, and I have a very high tolerance for queer. So I can't tell if my character is an effeminate boy or a masculine girl? Awesome, that means I can both identify with and fantasize about it at the same time! As long as the game plays well, I'm fucking there.

The point is, I need Caltrops to recommend something fruity and impenetrable for me on PS2 or 360. I don't care if it's staunchly traditional or frighteningly innovative, it doesn't matter to me, I have no point of reference. And don't bother suggesting anything that isn't an RPG, I have all of those. Except sports games, I don't know anything about them either, maybe I would be better off trying whatever passes for Punchout!! these days instead? Either way, help me out, because I'm counting on you.
