But I think what you really want is Auto Assult. It's kind of not at all gay.
If you're absolutely dead set Must Have JRPG, you should probably... not hate everything about JRPGs. That said:
If you can find it, you may like Legend Of Mana for the PS1 which, although it is genuinely and painfully homosexual, also features some gameplay which is a little more like an action game, and (more importantly) a LOT OF KNOB TWIDDLING. Also you generate the gamespace as you play, which is cool.
You could also pick up Chrono Cross for PS1 - green label copies are very cheap, so it's a nice throwaway choice. Get ready for some GIANT GIANT pixels. The battle system in Chrono Cross is one of Square's worthier efforts, and you get access to a giant pile of playable teammates including slutty scientists and kawaii martians and androgynous rock stars. If you found Chrono Trigger impenetrably faggy, the good news is that Chrono Cross is impenetrably faggy in a completely different way. A lot of people really hated CC for not being a proper sequel to CT.
I'm hesitant to recommend Disgaea/Phantom Brave just because they have ONLY one thing going on it them, and if you hate that thing, you're fucked. But they're fun at first. Depending on your ability to handle games which have almost nothing to do with playing, and quite a lot to do with trading and collecting and economics, you could check out the Atelier series.
If you're committed to choking down a Final Fantasy game, 12 and 9 are best bets. I know everyone is all BUT 7 IS THE ULTIMATE except I found 7 totally unplayable. 9 is very soothing.
