Wha? I don't see the correlation. Different kinds of games have different kinds of entry fees (fundamentals that must be mastered before playing the game at a high level). I don't think Core War requires more or less of this than Quake. This stuff also depends on who you're playing, as the quality of the competition improves, so does the amount of basics you are expected to have mastered.
