This is a really nice article about Heroes II by the Digital Antiquarian, better than what I can do.
In my late bildungsroman years, I was heavily involved with people that made text adventure games and so many of them went on to lead interesting, creative lives that I have followed in the years past. Jimmy Maher (the aforementioned Digital Antiquarian) made "The King of Shreds and Patches" which is the greatest game ever to appear natively on the Amazon Kindle, as well as making it his job to write about old games.
Paul O'Brian writes the greatest Watchman analysis blog, several text game creators worked at video game companies or created them, one of them made the greatest Pac-Man-inspired game. Jimmy made it his job to do a deep-dive analysis on the same games that were on the shelf when I was working at Electronics Boutique during college, most of the games that he discusses are in a box in their jewel case in my attic. (I would swoop up PC games in 1995/1996/1997 when they went on sale. I don't know how I didn't have a net-zero income there.)
Might & Magic (I and II specifically) came first and were brilliant CRPG "blobber" games, a genre we will see later in the list.
I have a memory that HoMM2 was a favorite of Erik Wolpaw too, although I am struggling to find the source of this information. gog.com has HoMM2. It is the DOS version of the game that you get to play.
