I knew it was you. by Jerry Whorebach 07/03/2026, 2:45pm PDT
My introduction to... hang on, I can't write in this voice. I first heard about Harlan Ellison in Starlog. That was one of the periodicals I had access to as a little Canadian boy. I would've loved to read Fangoria but I'm sure the covers would've obviated it. I'm not sure if obviate is a word or the word that I am looking for but you tell me. My parents wanted me to learn the best of the best learning shit without ever being beaten or molested by the catholic clerics who ran the schools. So they gave me correspondence coursework and also access to whichever public library we were closest to every couple of weeks.

When I was 12 they bought me a computer with which to connect to the internet. (I had a Commodore 64 before that but they didn't want to hear about Quantum Link, it probably wasn't even a real thing). At first I didn't really have a preference when it came to search engines. They were all in my favourites (bookmarks) menu, so I just used webcrawler because it had a cute spider mascot. I think I was in the infoseek camp when google finally came along. I remember telling people on Dave's Video Game Classics forum that it was easy to find ROMs on google, Dracula X in particular (that everyone wanted). I think I should have been using ALtaVista instead of Infoseek beofre google but I can't change that now.

Anyway, pretty soon as I got access to the INTERNET i looked up the episodes of Babylon 5 that I was watching every day on Space The Imagination Station. Let's take a detour again here to remember Natasha Eloi. She was the network videographer at that time and unbelievably good looking. What a set of hair on her head! I think she was ahead of the curve in giving dorks a fake name because Eloi were from the Time Machine. OKAY so here is where I encountered Jay Michael Strachinsky (as he prefers it to be pronounced) through his fucking GENie posts. He was way in to Harlan Ellison for some reason. I kind of liked Ellison from my Canadian library past because he wrote short stories and those were easy to read, I'm not sure if I could have put up with him for 350 pages. My favourite was "A Boy and his Dog", I still reference that when I think a woman's dad might be a little bit TOO into protecting her virtue. Later I was required to read "repent said the harlequin to the ticktock man" as part of correspondence highschool but I'm not even going to bother capitalizing all of those words because come the fuck on.

I can't remember if I said I gravitated to the sci-fi part of the sci-fi/fantasy part of the library because I wasn't gay. Well that was it. Bruce Sterling the father of cyberpunk was somehow still less gay in my little child mind than an actual literal unicorn. I was wrong about so many things.

Oh okay let's finish talking about JMS. I like all of Babylon 5, even the fifth seaon, which was all about predicting the aftermath of 9/11 with scary precision. But he also wrote the most unforgivable Spider-Man story in the history of those. Every other Spider-Man story has been retconned or will be retconned besides that one. He tries to argue like it wasn't his choice, they were going to do it anyway. But that man was a rich and... powerful?... I guess he could maybe get a meeting with TNT... writer. He had a house which was paid off. He wrote the story that will go down in history as the end of Spider-Man. You couldn't pay me to do that, and I am fucking garbage nobody. I won't remember this tomorrow. Goodbye!
