I don't know what to do with the Grand Theft Auto series. I liked 1 and 2 a lot. One of them would be on this list if they never made 3 and the others. This is what Fussbett had to say about #4. We all had fun with GTA4. It's like that scene in Succession where Cousin Greg says he likes California Pizza Kitchen. Maybe we liked 4 but we weren't supposed to like it. I liked driving around and causing havoc in GTA4. Good times were had! I didn't stop having fun because some of the writing was bad and the scripted missions were awful and on bad timers and they don't give you enough check points. I could start up GTA4 tomorrow afternoon -- if it worked, see below -- and play it for an hour and be entertained. On one hand, you are guaranteed to be able to pick up a GTA game in online mode and have fun...
Well, except for the mandatory opening in 5. You gotta do things in a certain order and because I ended up getting GTA5 three times. I got it for the Xbox 360 because that is what I had when it came out. I got it for the PS4 to play multiplayer with friends, and I got it on my computer to do multiplayer with my eldest nephew who also had it on Steam. I lost my saved game for the PS4 at one point, so I did the stupid opening at least four times. I have a memory that you have to do it before you can even get into a multiplayer game. That can't be right. I am checking with a search. Okay. Google's AI says, "Yes, you must complete the single-player opening prologue mission before you can access GTA Online." Christ, I hated GTA5.
So I'm putting GTA3, the Vice City version here because GTA3 is the seminal third person action-adventure-driving game. It changed everything. It also had missions that didn't give you a decent margin for error, but we all spent so much time dragging people out of their cars and driving around and going on rampages. GTA3 did not actually work through Steam when I tried it for this article, and the unofficial patch, which has 343 fucking pages of discussion to it, offered no hope, either. All the billions Rockstar is spending on GTA6 and they can't pay a guy 60K a year to throw some tokens at the games they happily sell in a broken fashion on Steam to make sure they work. Why is there an official patch at all. I was going to get a screenshot for this, but fuck these guys. |
