Re: The 100 Greatest Video Games of All-Time by pinback Yesterday, 3:48pm PDT
Yes, the game was initially met with great derision, because everyone claimed it was "unfair" and nobody could win. This was untrue, they were just very bad at the game, and did not expect a modern game to expect that level of analysis and intelligence of its players.

So they released a version which

1. Revamped "normal" difficulty to be easier. (Which absolutely ruined the fun of "normal" level, which was perfectly balanced, but everyone is dumb.)

2. Broke a bunch of stuff.

Enough of the games' fans complained about #1, so at that point they:

1. Changed "normal" back to the original design.
2. Added an "easy" mode.
3. Did not fix any of the broken stuff.

They continued to not fix the broken stuff until the game itself wouldn't load, and you needed to do the "beta branch" thing.

It's all pathetic, but I don't blame the developers/publishers as much as I blame the gaming public, who pronounced the game a failure because they were bad at it, and thus ditched the chances of success for what I still feel is one of the great turn-based strategy games of all time, and which really does belong on this list.

But yeah, I understand and will accept its removal. It's all very sad and disappointing.
