In stark contrast, it's the men who want to be slender, vulnerable and protected. Young males between the ages of 18 and 30 make up the slimmest segment of the population and the ideal fashion weight as decreed by the apparel industry is 57 kilograms, or about 125 pounds, for a height of 175 centimeters, or 5 feet 8 inches. Many men try to adhere to that figure and some claim they want to be even skinnier.


In my first few days in Tokyo, I made the mistake of clothes shopping. Their shirts were so tight you felt naughty for moving your arms. The girls said that's how guys wear them in Tokyo and because it was winter and everyone was covered up I trusted them. It is a lie! The biggest night club in Asia was ruined for me because of the wishful thinking of a bunch of Japanese girls. Only the faggoty-assed guys sipping drinks alone wear shirts that tight. Everyone else dressed quite normally and had a great time. I was the white, scrawny, 195cm tall dickhead wearing some faux-retro polyester Japanese roadcleaner shirt that exposed my hairy bellybutton whenever I breathed too deeply. I pretended to be more drugged than I was so people would leave me alone in the corner. No proper Japanese guy buys this shit.


Twenty-five-year-old Junichi Shirakawa, who works at the denim boutique 45 RPM, said that his goal is to get his weight down from 57 to 55 kilograms, although his height is 182 centimeters. "Being really skinny is essential, not just for fashion and work purposes but also because girls seem to go for thin guys," he said.


As a thin guy, try having sex with an decent Eastern European girl. Thinness is starving for girls from developing countries. Poor Asians will look past it because they have very low expectations, but these decent Eastern European girls just can't get over it and they're only making fucking €200 a month so holy fuck lady let's try and turn a blind eye.

I mean, if I were ugly, I'd be fat. Fat people can put their ugliness down to being overweight. They still have the potential for beauty, but a skinny guy wears his ugliness on his sleeve. I think that's why a lot of fat people stay fat and perhaps that's what the Japanese are on about with this fad.


Indeed, it seems that Japanese women have reclaimed sexuality as their very own and now dress to enhance their self-esteem rather than to please the male gaze, which was what a big part of street fashion had been about.


I like to pretend I can tell Japanese from Chinese from Korean based on their face alone but it's pretty hit and miss, even for Asians themselves. The much more accurate heuristic they, I, and now you can use is...
Tight jeans + casual shoes = Japanese
Tight jeans + dress shoes = Chinese
Lose jeans + any shoes = Korean

Hopefully this fad doesn't fuck with this.
