A few years ago I decided to give anime a chance and rented all the biggies: Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, and Vampire Hunter D. They were all a cavalcade of violent grotesquery drawn by freaks with an unhealthy obsession with showing people's faces exploding and splattering in lovingly rendered detail.

Fussbett was once bemused that I would watch the shit out of The Krays but despised all (other) sadistic movies.

"It's because the dialogue is so snappy." I explained. "There's no way that shit is actually happening." It transcends even my black-hole levels of disbelief-suspendin'!

Similarly: anime. Because it's.... animated! And fantastically stylized. Fist Of The North Star is cool and L&O: Rape Up Close In Detail With Glistening Blood And Real Screams Of Agony is not cool, and I don't think there's anything rapidly cycling about my position on this issue because one of them is glorious camp in no more than 100 colors and the other one...isn't.

Another thing you keep missing: I don't have a problem with violence. I have a problem with sadism. Your inability to separate the two is telling.

There's an episode of GitS:SAC first season that made me go vegetarian for two years, if that helps you to reconcile matters at all. I also cover my eyes and ears for parts of The Krays!

Were there sadism in Silence of the Lambs?

These arguments always devolve into people trying to persuade me that the sadistic shit they enjoy isn't really sadistic, because they (the people making the argument) aren't sadists! QED! One of the nicest things about Certain Posters is that they don't struggle with this issue at all: they'll make a case on the points that I'm wrong and they're sadists. I wish you would just go with that idea rather than trying to redeem The Silence Of The Fucking Lambs to Zseni - an argument that you are not now, nor will you ever be, clever enough to push.


You use this word "sadism" all the time. I do not think it means what you think it means.

There's a definition which involves sexual gratification (the classical de Sadean sense) and one which doesn't (the latter is carefully outlined in the DSM:IV for Sadistic Personality Disorder.) I can't believe that you would float SOTL as lacking either so that means that you're now three times stupider than I originally took you to be: once for missing the sexual sadism, once for missing the non-sexual sadism, and once for expecting me to be wrong about a definition when I score the elusive Free Rice 49 without any aids whatsoever.
