No, it's for the same reason people like Zatoichi. It's a character with a flaw who not only lives and deals with said flaw, they accomplish incredible things in spite of said flaw or even turn it to their advantage (Zatoichi using his blindness to hustle Yakuza, Columbo using his unhip persona to cause the crafty villain to totally underestimate him, etc.)
I don't know where you bring Law and Order into that context, one of the things I loved about that show was while the characters obviously had backgrounds, the show only mentioned these details in passing, the focus was on the case front and center. Then again I only watched vanilla Law and Order until Orbach left so maybe White Collar L&O or Raperiffic L&O are all focused on how messed up the detectives and prosecutors are.
Were there sadism in Silence of the Lambs? I never thought of Lector as a sadist, just a completely amoral monster. I thought one of the best things about that movie was the tug of war between Buffalo Bill trying to dehumanize his potential victim to avoid feelings of guilt, and the potential victim crying about her family or her mother on TV giving personal details to humanize her. Then again I never saw "Hannibal" which I heard was all about Lector killing assholes in poetically just ways, so maybe the character does eventually get turned into a sadist. Sure beats Red Dragon where they turned him into a spring-loaded cat. |
